Snowy Manhattan
It was nice to wake up this morning to a snowy Manhattan. When I got outside onto my street, the snow was really light. It’s seems to be coming down much harder now. Hoping they call it an early day for us :)

Roman & Williams is a definite source of inspiration. I think Sabrina and I refer to them constantly when thinking/talking about design work. Recently, I find myself citing spaces they have created as some of my favorite in NYC, from the Ace Hotel to the bar at the Standard. I love the way their work evokes a moodiness in textures and found objects, that often pay homage to another era. They mix this vintage romanticism with a balance of contemporary and modern touches.
Above is a video originally posted on The Scout, of the principal designers Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer speaking about their process.

Just got back to my desk to find a treat from a co-worker. He brought back a box of red velvet cupcakes from Big Booty Bakery for a bunch of us. Funny name aside, they have awesome baked goods (and empanadas!) If you’re near Chelsea, definitely check them out.

I finally got around to trying Pentagram’s ‘What Type Are You’ application. In it, they ask four character questions, analyzes your responses in detail, and recommends one of 16 typefaces as a result.
Go to the ‘What Type Are You’ test.

Living in NYC, you come to appreciate product design created to optimize what is often a very small space. Studio apartments typically are separated by dividers to make a bedroom wall. This curtain by Bauke Knottnerus could be a great alternative to the expensive drywall.

Street art pieces by Aakash Nihalani have recently popped up on the streets of New York City. Very graphic in style, each highlight the contours and geometry of the city surroundings.

Ok.. I’ve been terrible keeping up with this. I blame the move to NYC and other life distractions.
Regardless, watch this space as updates will be soon and often, along with a redesign of both this blog and madeitpretty.com
xx
Oh, and speaking of the move back to NYC, check out this link to an installation called “I’ve Lived: Post-it Notes for Neighbors” that welcomes passers-byes to fill in their monthly rent in the 5 boros. Ugh, overpriced rent. I feel ya.
