Roomscape

Living in NYC, you come to appreciate product design created to optimize what is often a very small space. Studio apartments typically are separated by dividers to make a bedroom wall. This curtain by Bauke Knottnerus could be a great alternative to the expensive drywall.

Roland Reiner Tiangco’s Dirt Poster

My friend Sabrina linked me to this cool poster designed by Roland Reiner Tiangco. The Dirt Poster requires participation to complete it. The back side of each poster is covered with a layer of ink, which you need to “paint” onto the front side the poster, to reveal the message that has been spot-varnished onto the paper. The poster is limited edition and can be bought for $80.

Jay B of PUBLIC SCHOOL designed a poster series with lessons to live by and things to keep in mind. PUBLIC SCHOOL is a group of creative folk working on the east side of Austin together, yet not together. The same studio, different professions.
Check out the rest of the series here.

"All over the world, some of the most dynamic and innovative creative work is being done for retail concepts. The top talent wants to create retail concepts and spaces. Retail is the epicenter of design and experience."

Spanish designers Cano Estudio have created We Love City, a range of city guides that fit on postcards. The cards recommend hotels, sights, shops, restaurants and bars for visitors on short trips. Produced for different cities at particular times, they feature details of current events and things not to miss that are specific to that period. The guides can be downloaded in PDF format from the Cano Estudio website.
Sidenote: Did I mention I’m going to Spain? Madrid & Barcelona for a week post Christmas with a return in the new year!

Sabrina and I had a chance to attend the International Contemporary Furniture Fair thanks to a sweet hookup from friend Dave Pinter of PSFK. We had a weeklong badge but were only able to make it on the last day. It was a great show, and the first time both of us attended. I didn’t really get to take many photos, but you can check out the ones that Dave took all week long over at the PSFK site.
Above are field notes fueledbycoffee as they went undercover to observe NYC Design Week and ICFF with an aim to reveal the forces that truly drive NYC Design Week. Enjoy the full compilation here.

Jason Santa Maria on the Influence of Print Design

The latest Dot Dot Dot lecture, The Influencers, SVA faculty member Jason Santa Maria talks about the influence of print design on web design, and how the established aesthetic techniques used in print aren’t transferrable to the web, and why that is.
