Roman & Williams is a definite source of inspiration. I think Sabrina and I refer to them constantly when thinking/talking about design work. Recently, I find myself citing spaces they have created as some of my favorite in NYC, from the Ace Hotel to the bar at the Standard. I love the way their work evokes a moodiness in textures and found objects, that often pay homage to another era. They...

Have you seen this? The animation Logorama won a much deserved Oscar in the short film category. If you haven’t, watch as in a world made up entirely of trademarks and brand names, Michelin Man cops pursue a criminal Ronald McDonald.

McNally Jackson Books Cafe by Front Studio
I had somewhat recently tweeted from the McNally Jackson books cafe in Nolita about how much I loved the space and the fixtures designed by Front Studio. My iPhone photo really did not do it much justice, so I was thankful to stumble upon these much better quality shots from Kitsune Noir. I love the pages of the books that line the walls, and the books that seemingly float overhead. It’s a...

Vans and the places they were
Vans and the places they were documents surviving 70’s and 80’s era conversion vans parked on streets throughout the Bay Area and Southern California. The project, led by Joe Stevens, began in 1996 and currently consists of hundreds of images shot on 120 film and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. As these...

Roger Ebert's inspiring interview with Esquire...
“I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our...

Snowy Manhattan
It was nice to wake up this morning to a snowy Manhattan. When I got outside onto my street, the snow was really light. It’s seems to be coming down much harder now. Hoping they call it an early day for us :)

Sean John x Aakash Nihalani
Sean John Clothing collaborated with Brooklyn artist Aakash Nihalani for their pop-up store which opened last weekend in Miami Beach. The colorful geometric pieces are used creatively throughout the store and front display. More photos of the space at Sean John’s blog.

What Type Are You?
I finally got around to trying Pentagram’s ‘What Type Are You’ application. In it, they ask four character questions, analyzes your responses in detail, and recommends one of 16 typefaces as a result. Go to the ‘What Type Are You’ test. Password: Character (For the record, I was Bifur, designed by French graphic artist Cassandre.)

Roomscape
Living in NYC, you come to appreciate product design created to optimize what is often a very small space. Studio apartments typically are separated by dividers to make a bedroom wall. This curtain by Bauke Knottnerus could be a great alternative to the expensive drywall.

Roland Reiner Tiangco's Dirt Poster
My friend Sabrina linked me to this cool poster designed by Roland Reiner Tiangco. The Dirt Poster requires participation to complete it. The back side of each poster is covered with a layer of ink, which you need to “paint” onto the front side the poster, to reveal the message that has been spot-varnished onto the paper. The poster is limited edition and can be bought for $80.

Measuring Type
Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth compared a selection of the most commonly used typefaces for how economical they are with the amount of ink which they use at the same point size. The project called, Measuring Type, uses large scale renditions of the typefaces drawn out with ballpoint pens, allowing the remaining ink levels to display the ink efficiency of each typeface. One of the better finds in my new neighborhood was the Steven Alan outpost. I’m a big fan of the designer and with this recent cute and charming spin on the traditional lookbook, even more so.

Miranda July for Vice Magazine
Last summer I found myself walking around the MOMA Design store. Their book selection in particular is amazing. I picked up Miranda July’s “Learning to Love you More” on a whim, not realizing that she was of the same creative mind behind “Me You and Everyone We Know”. I also then began reading her book “No One Belongs Here More than you” which narrates...

The above isn’t a PR stunt for the Amazon Kindle, but an installation by artist Alicia Martin. Linz in Upper Austria is currently European Capital of Culture and these cascades of books can be viewed pouring out of windows onto the main street.
